Roman Coppola | USA / France | 2001 | 98 minutes
![]() | Admittedly this is a US-France co-production, which moves between the English and French languages – along with black and white and colour and 16 and 35mm. But is thereby also a highly self-reflexive commentary on filmmaking, particularly the kind of co-productions that existed in the 1960s, as earlier critiqued by Contempt. Indeed, at the heart of the film is an idealistic young filmmaker who struggles to realise his authentic auteur vision whilst working on a Barbarella meets Danger Diabolik meets Alphaville styled science-fiction fantasy adventure set in the far off year of 2001.
